Low-Pressure Area Over Bay of Bengal to Bring Rain to Tamil Nadu

Chennai, February 16: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal by Monday, which is expected to bring rain to Tamil Nadu and surrounding regions in the coming days.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a cyclonic circulation is currently present in the upper atmosphere around the equator and the southeastern Bay of Bengal. This system is likely to develop into a low-pressure area over the central part of the southern Bay of Bengal and the adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean by Monday.

This weather system could affect rainfall activities in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until February 21. The weather department has indicated that several districts may experience light to moderate rainfall during this period. While heavy and widespread rainfall is not anticipated at this time, meteorologists are closely monitoring the system to provide timely updates should it strengthen.

Forecasts suggest that light to moderate rain is likely in various locations across the state, particularly in coastal and northern districts, where cloudy skies and intermittent rain may occur. Additionally, light fog is expected in some areas on Sunday.

Areas such as Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Puducherry may experience rain along with fog, prompting authorities to advise caution for early morning commuters due to reduced visibility.

Fishermen have also been urged to stay updated with the latest weather information, especially those operating in the southern Bay of Bengal and adjacent equatorial marine areas.

Officials have stated that as the system progresses, new information will be released. Low-pressure areas forming in the Bay of Bengal often bring intermittent rainfall to Tamil Nadu, providing some relief from drought-like conditions in several districts. Residents are advised to pay attention to official updates from the Regional Meteorological Centre for the latest weather information.
