Srinagar, May 19: The Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Department (PDD) announced on Monday that it has successfully restored over 50% of the electricity supply across the Kashmir Valley, following widespread disruptions caused by heavy rain and strong winds late Sunday evening.

Transmission Infrastructure Hit Hard
According to a senior official, the storm caused severe damage to the 33kV and 11kV transmission lines across several districts. The violent gusts also uprooted and toppled power poles, leading to large-scale outages.
“Strong winds and torrential rainfall damaged major sections of the power infrastructure,” the official said. “Districts including Kulgam, Pulwama, Srinagar, and parts of North Kashmir have reported significant impacts.”
Swift Restoration Underway
Despite the extent of the damage, PDD teams were immediately mobilized to assess and repair the affected areas. “So far, we have managed to restore over 50% of the electricity supply,” the official added. “Our teams are working around the clock, and we are hopeful that 100% restoration will be achieved by this evening.”
The department also urged the public to be patient and cooperate with ground staff who are working under challenging weather conditions to bring services back online.
As extreme weather events become more frequent in the region, the incident highlights the growing need for resilient infrastructure and rapid-response protocols in Kashmir’s energy sector.
