Jio, Airtel, Vi Users: Incoming Caller ID to Display Aadhaar-Based Names Soon

NEW DELHI — In a major technological upgrade aimed at curbing spam and fraudulent calls, telecom giants Jio, Airtel, and Vi are gearing up to roll out Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) — a feature that will display the verified name of the caller, as per the KYC details linked to Aadhaar, during incoming calls.

Caller ID to Display Aadhaar-Based Names

This move, recommended by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and backed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), is expected to revolutionize how users identify incoming calls, eliminating the need for third-party caller ID apps such as Truecaller.

Verified Identity to Tackle Scam Calls

With increasing concerns around unsolicited marketing calls and digital fraud, CNAP is positioned as a game-changer for mobile security. Unlike third-party apps that rely on user-generated data, CNAP will fetch the caller’s name directly from the telecom operator’s KYC database, ensuring authenticity.

Telecom companies are collaborating with HP, Dell, Nokia, and Ericsson to develop and implement the necessary infrastructure for a phased rollout of this system across India. Once launched, users will see the official name of the person or entity calling, as per Aadhaar-linked documents — a much-needed step to improve transparency and reduce unwanted interactions.

Seamless User Experience and Enhanced Privacy

The feature, expected to launch in phases over the coming months, will enhance the calling experience while keeping user privacy and data protection at the core. It will not only improve call-screening efficiency but also allow users to make informed decisions before picking up unknown numbers.

Officials at TRAI have emphasized that CNAP will be optional and opt-in based, allowing users to control how their information is displayed. At the same time, companies will be held accountable to update accurate information, making it harder for fraudsters to operate.

UPI Glitch Causes Nationwide Disruption

In related tech news, a massive outage hit UPI services on March 26, affecting digital transactions across several leading banks including HDFC Bank, SBI, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Bank of Baroda.

The disruption, which began around 7 PM, prevented users from making or receiving payments via UPI — a platform relied upon for seamless daily transactions by millions of Indians. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) acknowledged the issue and reported that services were restored by 8:40 PM.
