India Votes for UN Resolution Ending US Embargo on Cuba
India backed a UN resolution calling for an end to the US embargo on Cuba, emphasizing the need for humanitarian support.

NEW DELHI, Oct 30: India has voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution that calls for an end to the economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba. This resolution passed with 130 countries supporting it, while 17 opposed and 25 abstained.
Soumya Nair, Counsellor at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, emphasized in her statement that the embargo should be lifted to enable Cuba to pursue its development objectives. She noted the negative impacts of the restrictions, particularly on healthcare and food production, stating, “the health system faces shortages of over 60% of essential medicines” and “food production has declined by more than 50% in the past five years.” Nair also pointed out that the embargo has aggravated fuel shortages, which disrupt essential services.
The ongoing conflict between the US and Cuba has roots in the Cuban Revolution of 1959. Following Fidel Castro’s rise to power, the US established a trade embargo to pressure the communist government, claiming it was a necessary measure. In contrast, Cuba attributes its economic struggles directly to these restrictions.
The recent UN vote reflects longstanding international opposition to the US sanctions, which are non-binding. During the UN session, tensions escalated between US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, leading to a heated confrontation that resulted in a temporary suspension of the meeting.
Waltz criticized Cuba’s leadership, alleging that while ordinary Cubans face deprivation, Cuban officials enjoy luxurious lifestyles. He stated, “this individual needs to back away from this podium. He is not going to intimidate me…” This incident highlights the heightened tensions surrounding the discussion of the embargo.
