Kohima, July 28: The Indian Air Force has launched a large-scale rescue operation in Nagaland due to heavy rainfall and landslides affecting various regions. In coordination with the state government, the Air Force successfully evacuated over 100 stranded civilians on Tuesday and delivered essential relief supplies to remote areas.
Officials stated that the operation primarily focuses on rescuing individuals isolated due to disrupted road connectivity caused by landslides and continuous rain. Additionally, the Air Force is providing aerial support to civilian administration and accessing areas where roadways have been completely blocked.
The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority reported multiple landslides across several districts due to the heavy monsoon rains, severely impacting the road network. Particularly, the road connectivity in Mon and Longleng districts has been cut off. Following this, the state disaster management authority requested assistance from the Indian Air Force to conduct aerial operations for evacuating stranded passengers and delivering relief materials. The state government’s helicopter has also been deployed for relief efforts.
During the rescue operation, candidates traveling to take part in the Nagaland Public Service Commission’s Combined Education Services Examination were also safely evacuated, as their travel plans were disrupted due to road closures.
The relief supplies delivered by the Air Force include food items, medical kits, clothing, and other essential goods. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority indicated that aerial rescue and relief operations would continue as needed, considering the weather and ground conditions.
Furthermore, relief distribution efforts have been intensified in other affected districts. Trucks loaded with relief materials have been dispatched from Mokokchung to Tuli, while rations have been distributed among stranded and displaced families in the Changtongya area.
District disaster management authorities have also begun providing financial assistance to affected families under the emergency relief fund. Families in Wokha district whose homes and protective walls were damaged due to landslides have received financial aid. In addition, the Deputy Commissioner of Shamator district has provided immediate relief funds to two families affected by the rains, and five families in the Junhebo district impacted by landslides have also received ERF assistance.
The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority has confirmed that necessary funds for road restoration, debris removal, and emergency relief operations have already been released to all districts.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio shared updates on the social media platform X, stating that Home Guards, Civil Defence, and SDRF personnel are working alongside other disaster relief agencies and departments in the rescue and relief efforts. He emphasized that all agencies are collaborating to deliver relief to affected areas and restore normalcy.
The state government, Indian Air Force, SDRF, and district administration teams are currently on high alert, with ongoing operations for rescue, relief distribution, and road restoration in the monsoon-affected regions.
