Mumbai, July 20: Congress leader Naseem Khan criticized the central government on Monday, addressing issues related to the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament, disruptions in proceedings, the CJP’s Parliament march, and the inclusion of Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs into the Shinde faction. He alleged that the government is undermining democratic traditions and avoiding discussions on public interest issues raised by the opposition.
In an interview, Khan emphasized that Parliament is the supreme platform for discussing issues related to the nation and its people. He noted that Congress, along with Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge, has been consistently demanding a detailed discussion in Parliament on serious matters such as the alleged donation theft at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and the NEET paper leak.
Khan pointed out that the NEET paper leak has affected the future of millions of students, and the government should be held accountable for this issue. The opposition has raised demands for discussions on several important public interest topics, and it is the government’s responsibility in a democracy to address these concerns and be accountable. If the government has made mistakes, it should acknowledge them and take necessary action. He accused the central government of attempting to suppress the voices of the opposition and the youth, which is why parliamentary proceedings are repeatedly being adjourned.
Regarding the continuous disruptions in Parliament, Khan stated that there is nothing wrong with the opposition raising public issues. Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge are bringing the people’s problems to the house, but the government is unwilling to discuss them. The government is evading accountability, which is why the proceedings are being adjourned repeatedly. If the government is ready for discussion, the house can function smoothly.
On the obstruction of Sonam Wangchuk and the CJP’s Parliament march, the Congress leader remarked that there is a serious threat to democracy in the country. The BJP and RSS are misusing power to weaken democratic rights. If any organization wishes to peacefully protest or march, it should be allowed; instead, protesters are met with police action and tear gas, denying them the opportunity to voice their concerns. This is against democratic values. The government is attempting to suppress the voices of the public, especially the youth.
When questioned about the ‘Vande Mataram Bill,’ Khan stated that the opposition supports every good initiative. If a law is in the public interest, it will be backed. However, he alleged that if a bill is introduced to target a specific group or divert attention from real issues, it is natural to raise questions. Currently, serious issues such as inflation, unemployment, the future of youth, and the alleged donation theft at the Ram Temple are at stake, yet the government is prioritizing other matters instead of discussing these topics.
On the recognition of six MPs from the Uddhav Thackeray faction joining the Shinde faction, Khan termed it a betrayal of the public. The people of Maharashtra had sent candidates from the Maha Vikas Aghadi to the Lok Sabha against the BJP, expressing trust in the coalition’s policies. The MPs have decided to switch parties due to pressure or other reasons. They have not lived up to the expectations of the voters who elected them, and in the future, voters will not forgive them for this.
