The U.S. Federal Reserve voted to maintain interest rates at a target range of 3.75% to 4.00% on Wednesday. This decision aligns with market expectations and comes just days before the midterm elections, where inflation has emerged as a key issue.

In a 10-2 vote, the Federal Open Market Committee cited the need for more data in the ongoing battle against inflation. The Fed stated, “The accumulation of more information will help the Committee determine the policy stance appropriate to ensure a timely return of inflation to the Committee’s two percent goal.”

Two members—Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack—dissented, advocating for an immediate 0.25-percentage-point increase. This reflects ongoing concerns over inflation, which has exceeded the Fed’s long-term target for over five years.

The decision comes after the consumer inflation rate increased to 3.7% in September, largely driven by rising energy prices and other costs. Domestic spending and productivity growth have shown resilience, contributing to the Fed’s optimistic assessment of economic activity, described as expanding at a “strong pace.”

However, uncertainty remains high due to geopolitical factors, and Fed officials, including Michelle Bowman, indicated a cautious approach is warranted. Bowman noted, “I don’t feel any urgency for taking further action at this point.”

U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach to the economy has been a focal point in the midterm campaigns, with criticism directed at the Fed’s past rate hikes. He has suggested that interest rates should be significantly lower, expressing a desire for rates of 1% or less.

The Fed’s next meeting is set for December 8-9, during which it will make its final decision on interest rates for the year, with some market forecasts suggesting a potential quarter-point increase.
