Rome, May 11: Elena Rybakina has secured her place in the Round of 16 at the Italian Open. The former champion in Rome defeated Alexandra Eala in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3 at the Foro Italico on Sunday. This marks Rybakina’s fourth appearance in the Round of 16 in her five attempts in the Italian capital.
The victory further solidifies Rybakina’s position as one of the top performers on the women’s tour this season. She now leads the WTA Tour in main-draw wins for 2026 with 29 victories. Rybakina is the only player to reach the Round of 16 in all six WTA 1000 tournaments this year.
The 2023 Rome champion will face either Karolína Plíšková or Laura Siegemund in the next round, against whom she has a strong head-to-head record.
In her first career encounter with the Filipino star Eala, Rybakina’s powerful baseline game proved decisive. The world number 2 showcased her dominance with strong forehands and impressive serves, pushing Eala far behind the baseline and forcing her to run from one end of the court to the other throughout the match.
