Shimla, February 3 – A mild earthquake struck Kullu district in Himachal Pradesh on Monday morning, adding to the ongoing spell of extreme cold in the region. The tremors, measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale, were felt at 6:50 AM for a few seconds. The earthquake’s impact was also experienced in adjoining areas of Kullu.
According to the Meteorological Department in Shimla, the epicenter of the earthquake was recorded at 31.76 degrees north latitude and 77.49 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 5 kilometers beneath the surface. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage due to the tremors.
No Losses Reported, But Frequent Tremors Raise Concerns
An official from the State Disaster Management Authority confirmed that since the earthquake’s intensity was low, no significant damage was reported in Kullu and its surrounding areas.
Himachal Pradesh has witnessed several mild earthquakes in recent times, particularly in Mandi, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kinnaur districts. However, there have been no reports of significant damage or casualties in these occurrences either.
The frequent seismic activity in the state has triggered concerns among residents, as tremors have become a common phenomenon over the past few years.

Himachal Pradesh lies in the highly seismic zones (Zone 4 & 5), making it one of the most earthquake-prone regions in India. The region has a history of devastating earthquakes, the most catastrophic being the 1905 Kangra earthquake, which claimed the lives of over 10,000 people.
Given the seismic vulnerability of the state, experts emphasize the importance of earthquake-resistant infrastructure, regular earthquake drills, and preparedness measures to mitigate potential disasters.
Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Snow Expected in Himachal
Apart from the seismic activity, Himachal Pradesh is also set to witness extreme weather conditions in the coming days.

🔹 Clear Weather from February 6-9: After the spell of rain and snow, the weather is expected to clear up between February 6-9.
