DOJ Subpoenas California Election Officials in Voter Fraud Investigation
The Department of Justice has subpoenaed election officials in California counties over alleged voter fraud, drawing condemnation from local officials.

CALIFORNIA, Oct 30: The Department of Justice has subpoenaed local election officials in at least four California counties as part of an investigation into alleged voter fraud, particularly focusing on noncitizen voting.
The subpoenas target officials in Los Angeles, Orange, Santa Clara, and San Diego counties. They request detailed voter information, including registration status and voting history, as part of a criminal probe.
Los Angeles County Registrar Dean Logan confirmed the issuance of grand jury subpoenas, asserting that his office is complying with the requests. He emphasized that local election officials are following state and federal law, stating, “At every step, the U.S. Department of Justice has taken a confrontational, adversarial approach.” Logan also expressed appreciation for a federal judge’s warning against threatening election officials, highlighting the need for their safety.
U.S. District Judge David O. Carter recently admonished the DOJ to cease threats aimed at local officials and denied a request to sequester ballots that could have been sent to noncitizens. “Never before in American history has the federal government, on the eve of an election, sought to coerce a state and local government to abandon their own Constitutional elections procedures,” Carter said.
The subpoenas do not imply that the officials involved are under investigation, but they have raised concerns about the DOJ’s aggressive tactics. The subpoenas have been sent at a critical time, just before the upcoming midterm elections.
The DOJ’s actions come on the heels of claims by President Donald Trump that California’s elections are “corrupt” and “rigged.” These responses have drawn criticism from election law experts, who labeled the DOJ’s actions a political maneuver. David Becker, Executive Director of the Center for Election Innovation and Research, called it a “blatant attempt by a politicized and weaponized Justice Department to serve a desperate president’s political agenda.”
In total, Orange County received four subpoenas requesting voter registration information for about 80 individuals, while Santa Clara County reported two subpoenas. Officials are set to provide requested materials to federal authorities, with some deadlines aligning closely with the election date.
As the investigation unfolds, local election officials remain focused on ensuring the integrity of the voting process and protecting their employees from potential intimidation.
