Divisional Commissioners to Head Merged Municipal Corporations in Rajasthan for the First Time

Jaipur, October 24 (Udaipur Kiran): For the first time in Rajasthan, Divisional Commissioners will take charge as administrators of municipal corporations. The state government has appointed administrators for the merged municipal bodies in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Kota. The tenure of the existing municipal boards in these cities will officially end on November 9.

Once the term concludes, the Divisional Commissioners will handle the administration of these corporations. This marks a major administrative shift, as such responsibilities were earlier assigned to District Collectors or Municipal Commissioners.

The move aligns with the state government’s “One State, One Election” plan, under which efforts are being made to synchronize local body elections across Rajasthan. Several urban local bodies in the state are already being managed by appointed administrators. By February 2026, the tenure of all municipal boards in the state will be completed, paving the way for simultaneous elections in all urban bodies.

According to sources in the Directorate of Local Self Government, the tenure of 50 urban bodies will expire in December this year, followed by 90 in January and one more in February next year.

In total, elections are expected to be held simultaneously in 309 municipal bodies across the state. Back in 2019, the then Gehlot government had reorganized wards in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Kota to create two separate corporations in each city, increasing the total number of urban bodies to 196.

From 2019 to 2021, elections were held for all these bodies. Later, based on population growth, several gram panchayats were upgraded to urban local bodies, adding 116 new municipal units, while three bodies — one each in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Kota — were recently dissolved. This brings the total to 309 municipal bodies, where elections are now likely to be held either at the end of this year or early next year.
