Caracas, August 4: The death toll from the recent earthquake in Venezuela continues to rise, with the latest official update from National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez indicating that the number has reached 6,125. This update pertains to the earthquake that struck on June 24.
According to a report posted on Rodriguez’s Telegram channel, the number of people rescued remains at 6,462, while 60,992 individuals have received medical treatment in hospitals. The update also revealed that authorities have provided 287 homes to families affected by the earthquake and assessed 43,679 buildings across the country.
The Venezuelan government has implemented a traffic-light tagging system to evaluate the habitability of buildings. As reported by Xinhua News Agency, green tags indicate habitable structures, yellow tags signify restricted access, and red tags identify high-risk buildings that may need to be demolished.
On June 24, two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude struck, centered in the western state of Yaracuy and the central state of La Guaira. Rodriguez previously noted that there are 10,981 people in shelters in the coastal state of La Guaira, while Caracas has 6,133 and the central state of Miranda has 1,323, areas that suffered the most damage.
Earlier, Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodriguez expressed gratitude for the humanitarian aid provided by 28 countries to support the victims of the recent earthquake. She made this statement after inspecting a collection center in Caracas, where over 2,000 tons of international assistance have been distributed to temporary camps for the earthquake victims.
Rodriguez stated, “Thank you very much to the countries that have helped us. Each country will be able to see how their assistance is being utilized so that the people of Venezuela can feel the friendly help from that country. Thank you for the international response to this tragedy; Venezuela knows it is not alone. Most importantly, we must look to the future, how we will recover, and how we will rebuild the affected areas.”
