London, March 7 – Derbyshire all-rounder David Lloyd has stepped down as club captain ahead of the 2025 season, marking a significant leadership change for the County Championship side. Lloyd, who joined Derbyshire from Glamorgan in 2023, captained the team last season but struggled to turn their fortunes around as Derbyshire finished bottom of Division Two, earning the ‘wooden spoon’.
Decision Driven by Personal and Performance Goals
Lloyd, 32, endured a difficult first full season, averaging 23.47 with the bat and 31.00 with the ball in the Championship. Hoping to improve his personal form, he has opted to step away from captaincy to focus entirely on his game.
Derbyshire’s Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, acknowledged Lloyd’s efforts, stating:
“David gave his absolute best in leading the side and has been an outstanding leader. However, the mental pressure of captaincy, coupled with his desire to regain top form and balance family life, made this the right decision for him.”
Arthur further praised Lloyd’s commitment to the team:
“David has been completely transparent with me about his decision. He remains highly motivated to contribute to the squad, and his experience and leadership will still be invaluable in the dressing room and on the field. We hope to see him at his best this season.”
Struggles Under Captaincy and Team’s Poor Performance
Lloyd took over as Derbyshire’s captain in 2024, succeeding Leus du Plooy, but the team failed to make a significant impact in the Championship. After finishing the 2023 season without a single win, Derbyshire managed just one victory in 2024, suffering six defeats and ultimately finishing at the bottom of the table.
However, that solitary win was a historic moment, ending a five-year winless drought in Championship cricket at Derby. Despite this, the team’s overall lack of progress made leadership changes inevitable.
Lloyd’s Statement on Stepping Down
Lloyd, reflecting on his decision, stated:
“This was not an easy choice for me, but after discussions with my family, friends, and teammates during the winter, I believe stepping down will allow me to concentrate fully on my game.”
He added:
“Captaining Derbyshire was a huge honor. Now, I’m excited to play with less pressure, learn from Mickey and the coaching staff, and showcase my best performances for our supporters.”
Lloyd remains committed to the team’s goals:
