Beijing, August 8: A handover ceremony for the first shipment of domestic solar energy systems provided to Cuba under Chinese assistance was held on Friday in the capital, Havana.
Cuba’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Oscar Pérez Oliva Fraga, along with the Chinese Ambassador to Havana, Hu Xin, attended the event.
During the ceremony, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted that the country’s national electricity system is facing serious challenges, with citizens grappling daily with the impacts of the American blockade. He emphasized that China’s support is crucial for Cuba, as it plays a significant role in the country’s energy transition and continues to provide assistance. The solar energy equipment will be distributed to families in remote areas, as well as to nurseries, banks, and old age homes affected by the energy crisis.
Chinese Ambassador Hu Xin remarked that this assistance is a gift from the Chinese people to the Cuban people. He noted that it is a significant outcome of energy and livelihood cooperation under the “Belt and Road” initiative. He assured that China will continue to assist Cuba in moving towards energy self-sufficiency and strengthen the construction of a shared future community between the two nations.
It is noteworthy that in November 2025, China had also delivered a shipment of 5,000 photovoltaic systems with a capacity of 2 kilowatts to Cuba. The current shipment includes 5,000 domestic solar energy systems with enhanced unit capacity and battery storage, designed considering Cuba’s electricity grid and tropical climate.
