An asteroid called 2024 CR9 is rapidly approaching Earth, prompting NASA scientists to closely monitor its orbit. The massive 1,400-foot-wide (427-meter) space rock will approach Earth on June 11, 2024.
The asteroid will pass about 4.58 million miles from Earth, which is about 19 times the average distance between Earth and the Moon. Although this distance seems very large, in astronomical terms it is only 0.04 Astronomical Units (AU). With a speed of 26,561 km/h relative to Earth, this collision is notable for its proximity.

What is an asteroid hitting Earth?
If an asteroid the size of 2024 CR9 were to hit Earth, the impact would be devastating. Such events are statistically rare, occurring approximately every 166,000 years. If this happens, the consequences will be devastating. The impact created a crater 1,363 feet deep and 2 miles wide, releasing the energy equivalent of 282 gigatons of TNT.
In the event of a collision, the trees within a radius of 130 km will be immediately ignited. The resulting 239-decibel shockwave destroys buildings within a 28-mile radius. In addition, there is a possibility of a large earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale.
NASA Guarantee NASA guarantees that asteroid 2024 CR9 will pass safely and without risk of collision. Despite this certainty, this approach reminds us of the potential danger posed by objects in our cosmic neighborhood.
Most asteroids are found in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. But CR9 2024 is likely wandering in space given its size and orbit.
Scientists are constantly trying to find ways to prevent such catastrophic events. NASA is developing technologies to redirect asteroids, including kinetic impactors, gravity tractors, ion beam shepherds and even nuclear explosives.
Although the likelihood of an asteroid impact is low, CR9’s approach in 2024 highlights the need for strong planetary defense measures. NASA closely monitors Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) to detect potential threats early and develop strategies to contain them.
