Penalties include:

  • Minimum fine of ₹2 lakh for the first offense

  • ₹5 lakh or more for repeat offenses (up to ten times the product value)

  • Up to two years imprisonment, or both fine and imprisonment

The BIS reiterated its commitment to ensuring that e-commerce platforms adhere strictly to Indian product quality and safety standards, thereby protecting consumer interests.

E-Commerce Platforms Under Regulatory Scrutiny

This development highlights the growing regulatory focus on compliance within the rapidly expanding e-commerce sector. With platforms like Amazon serving as intermediaries for third-party sellers, responsibility is increasingly shifting toward ensuring that listed products meet national safety and quality benchmarks.

Consumers are advised to look for ISI and BIS certification marks on critical products, especially electronics, kitchenware, and child-related goods, before making a purchase.
