Bihar Braces for Intense Heatwave as Temperature Nears 40°C; Hospitals on High Alert
PATNA — As Bihar approaches the end of March, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a sharp rise in temperatures, with several districts expected to hit 40°C in the coming days. In anticipation of a potential heatwave, the State Health Department has issued a statewide alert to hospitals, instructing them to prepare for heat-related medical emergencies.

Temperature Surge Expected Across Most of Bihar
Starting Wednesday, daytime temperatures began to climb significantly across the state. According to IMD projections, by March 31, all regions—except southeast and northeast Bihar—may record maximum temperatures nearing 40°C. The southwestern region of the state is likely to be the most affected, with localized heatwave conditions possible.
This marks an early onset of summer in Bihar, as similar conditions were only recorded in April last year. Meteorologists are warning that April and May 2025 may break past heat records, making early precautions vital.
Health Department Prepares for Heatwave Emergencies
In response to the rising heat, the State Health Society has directed all medical colleges, civil surgeons, and community health centers to:
-
Reserve at least 5 beds for heatstroke victims
-
Set up ORS Corners in all hospitals
-
Maintain adequate supplies of cold water, ORS packets, antidiarrheal medicines, fans, coolers, and medical equipment like rectal thermometers and ice makers
Hospitals have also been instructed to:
-
Conduct special awareness campaigns for children, elderly, and pregnant women
-
Ensure cold water and shaded waiting areas in OPDs
-
Activate Rapid Response Teams at district and block levels
-
Keep ambulances on standby, checked and ready for emergency evacuations
Heatwave Impact on Agriculture & Rural Areas
The early heat has raised alarms among farmers across Bihar. Rabi crops and fruit production are expected to suffer, with horticulture experts warning of up to 15% yield loss due to early temperature spikes.
The government is being urged to monitor irrigation needs and provide supportive measures to mitigate the impact on agriculture.
Public Advisory from IMD and Health Officials
Residents are urged to take precautionary measures:
-
Avoid direct sun exposure, especially between 12 PM and 4 PM
-
Stay hydrated with regular water intake
-
Wear loose, light-colored clothing
-
Keep children and the elderly indoors during peak hours
-
Report signs of heatstroke such as dizziness, confusion, or fainting
The IMD has emphasized that while some areas may receive light rain, overall weather will remain hot and dry, with dust-laden winds blowing at 20–30 km/h in parts of the state.
