Bengals Face Crucial Decision on Trey Hendricksons Future

Mumbai, February 17: The Cincinnati Bengals are at a crossroads as the window to place the franchise tag on players opens today and will remain open until March 3. For the second consecutive year, the team must make a significant decision regarding defensive end Trey Hendrickson.

After failing to secure a long-term extension with Hendrickson before the 2025 season, the Bengals now face a ticking clock. Hendrickson’s current contract will expire at 4 p.m. on March 11, coinciding with the start of the new league year. If the Bengals do not place the franchise tag on him or re-sign him before then, they will lose control over his future.

The franchise tag allows teams to retain a player while negotiations are ongoing, typically used when a long-term deal is being pursued. Last year, the Bengals successfully used this strategy with wide receiver Tee Higgins, leading to a contract extension.

This year, the Bengals have three options regarding Hendrickson: tag him and potentially trade him, let him enter free agency, or tag him with the expectation that he will play the 2026 season in Cincinnati. As of February 16, no decision is expected before the NFL combine in Indianapolis next week, where the Bengals will gather insights from other teams about their interest in Hendrickson.

The relationship between Hendrickson and the Bengals has been strained, with public comments from both sides indicating dissatisfaction with the negotiation process. Despite this tension, Hendrickson is anticipated to be a top defensive player available if he enters free agency, making the situation complex for the Bengals.

The Bengals’ signing of Hendrickson in 2021 is regarded as one of their best free-agent acquisitions, and they will seek to maximize their return if they decide to trade him. However, the valuation of Hendrickson at this stage of his career complicates matters, as teams may hesitate to give up significant draft capital while also absorbing his salary.

If the Bengals cannot find a trade partner, they will need to decide whether to let him become a free agent or place the franchise tag on him, which could lead to further complications given Hendrickson’s desire for long-term security.

The franchise tag amount for Hendrickson is set at $30.2 million fully guaranteed for one season. While he remains a top edge rusher when healthy, the Bengals must weigh the financial implications of this decision against their needs at other positions.
