March 25, 2025 | Kolkata | In a fresh episode of internal strife within the West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), four local office-bearers from the Behala West Assembly constituency have been temporarily expelled for allegedly misbehaving with senior party leaders, including newly appointed Kolkata South Lok Sabha organisational district president Anupam Bhattacharya.
The disciplinary action was taken following an incident during a public event held on Sunday, where tensions between rival factions escalated into a confrontation. The BJP’s internal disciplinary committee, led by Pratap Banerjee, issued notices to the four accused individuals, seeking their written explanation within seven days. Until then, they will remain suspended from all party activities.

Leaders Suspended Over Intra-Party Clash
The suspended members are:
-
Joy Ghosh
-
Rana Dwari
-
Sukumar Hazra
-
Divyendu Samanta
According to sources, the disruption occurred during an event meant to formally introduce Anupam Bhattacharya as the new district president. Members from an opposing faction reportedly targeted Bhattacharya and his supporters, leading to a heated altercation. The situation spiraled when black ink was thrown at Bhattacharya, prompting police intervention to restore order.
The party’s district leadership has lodged a formal police complaint, while the state unit acted swiftly to contain the fallout by suspending the individuals involved.
Internal Restructuring Sparks Tensions
This incident comes amid an ongoing organisational reshuffle in the Bengal BJP. Earlier this month, the party announced names of 25 district presidents out of 43, with 15 fresh faces inducted. The remaining appointments, along with the name of the new state BJP president, are expected to be finalized soon.
Sources suggest that these new appointments have caused internal friction, especially in constituencies where rival factions are vying for influence.
BJP State Leadership Responds
West Bengal BJP’s current state president and MP, Sukanta Majumdar, who also serves as Minister of State in the Union Government, is overseeing the reshuffle process. Party insiders indicate that he has taken a zero-tolerance stance on indiscipline to maintain unity ahead of the 2026 state assembly elections and 2024 Lok Sabha follow-ups.
The leadership hopes that these firm disciplinary actions will send a clear message across ranks, reinforcing the importance of organisational discipline and party decorum.
