Awami League Leader Dies During Remand Transfer in Bangladesh

Dhaka, December 22 (Udaipur Kiran) – An Awami League leader died while being taken on remand from Gazipur’s Kashimpur Central Jail, officials said. The deceased has been identified as 43-year-old Wasikur Rahman Babu from Uttar Bashbaria village in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj. Babu was a former president of the Badda Thana Chhatra League and served as the youth and sports secretary of the Badda Thana Awami League.

According to The Daily Star, Kashimpur Central Jail-2 superintendent Al Mamun stated that Babu died of a heart attack. Jail officials said Babu was arrested on September 24 under the Anti-Terrorism Act for allegedly participating in a procession in the Panthapath area of the capital. He was transferred to Kashimpur Central Jail-2 three days later. Subsequently, a court granted the police a three-day remand.

Al Mamun added that a police team came to the jail yesterday afternoon to take Babu into custody for questioning. After being brought to a jail room and asked to sit, Babu suddenly fell from his chair and lost consciousness. He was rushed to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur, where doctors declared him dead.
