Guwahati, June 19: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that BJP MLA Dr. Habbe Teron will be the ruling coalition’s candidate for the position of Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
In a statement on the social media platform ‘X’, Chief Minister Sarma confirmed that Dr. Teron, who represents the Amri (ST) constituency, has been nominated for this constitutional role. He expressed confidence that Dr. Teron would amplify the voices of tribal communities in the legislative process.
CM Sarma noted that Dr. Teron is a medical professional and the first elected representative from the newly formed Amri constituency. He emphasized that Dr. Teron represents the aspirations of Assam’s tribal communities and will enhance representation from the hilly districts in the state assembly.
The Chief Minister extended his best wishes to Dr. Teron for the upcoming election for the Deputy Speaker position.
Meanwhile, Dr. Habbe Teron expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for nominating him for the Deputy Speaker role. He stated, “I am deeply thankful to Chief Minister Sarma for nominating me on behalf of the NDA. I will dedicate myself to fulfilling my responsibilities with utmost commitment. I take pride in myself and my people. I am extremely happy and grateful to receive this significant responsibility. I will perform my duties with loyalty, diligence, and integrity, and strive to work according to the provisions of the Constitution. This is a positive message that the BJP-led government is working for all sections and communities.”
Dr. Teron’s candidacy is particularly significant as he hails from a tribal-majority hilly area and represents the newly created Amri (ST) constituency. His election to this position is viewed as a step towards ensuring greater participation of indigenous and tribal communities in the workings of the assembly.
With a comfortable majority in the 126-member Assam assembly, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is expected to see Dr. Teron’s election as merely a formality.
