Ashwin Advises Riyan Parag on Personal Choices Amid Vaping Controversy

New Delhi, May 1: Former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has commented on the vaping incident involving Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Riyan Parag, stating that such situations could have been avoided. He emphasized that personal choices should not be made in public spaces.

During the match between Punjab Kings and RR, Parag was caught vaping inside the dressing room while RR was chasing a target. A video of him vaping went viral on social media, sparking discussions about player discipline and the legality of such devices under Indian law.

On his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, “I believe this is a situation that could have been completely avoided. I don’t want players to get caught up in such things. I genuinely don’t want this for a young player, and it’s a bit sensitive.”

He added, “Sometimes it is a personal choice, but your personal choices should be made in private spaces. If you do this in public, it can easily be avoided. As an older brother, this is my small advice.”

Ashwin further stated, “No one can say anything about this. Whatever you do, do it in your private space, as you are the captain of a franchise. You are likely an inspiration to many cricketers, many youths, and young Indians around the world. Therefore, there is also some responsibility.”

The former Indian spinner noted that such incidents cannot be suppressed; without action, no one will learn from them. He expressed deep sympathy for the young player but firmly believes that such situations should be avoided.

Following the vaping incident, Parag was fined 25 percent of his match fee and received one demerit point. An IPL statement on Thursday confirmed that Parag admitted to breaching Level 1 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which includes “conduct that brings the game into disrepute.”
