Mumbai, May 2: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that 98.47% of ₹2000 notes have been returned following the decision to withdraw them from circulation. This figure comes nearly three years after the announcement to demonetize these notes.
The central bank had decided to withdraw the ₹2000 notes on May 19, 2023, as part of its currency management strategy. At that time, the total value of these notes was ₹3.56 lakh crore, which has now decreased to just ₹5,451 crore as of April 30, 2026.
The RBI stated, “When the announcement was made on May 19, 2023, the total value of ₹2000 notes in circulation was ₹3.56 lakh crore, which has now reduced to ₹5,451 crore.”
Since the announcement, the RBI has provided facilities to exchange ₹2000 notes at its 19 issue offices across the country. Additionally, from October 9, 2023, individuals can deposit these notes into their bank accounts at these offices.
The central bank also clarified that people can still send ₹2000 notes to any RBI issue office through India Post from any post office in the country for deposit into their bank accounts.
Furthermore, the RBI emphasized that despite being withdrawn from circulation, ₹2000 notes remain legal tender.
