Udaipur, December 3 : The 224th birth anniversary of Maharana Jawan Singh, the 68th custodian of the Mewar dynasty, was commemorated with reverence under the aegis of the Maharana Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF), Udaipur. The ceremony, held at the historic Rai Angan in the City Palace Museum, began with traditional rituals, including floral tributes, chanting of mantras, and the lighting of ceremonial lamps before his portrait.
Dr. Mayank Gupta, Chief Executive Officer of MMCF, shared that Maharana Jawan Singh was born on Margashirsha Sudi Dwitiya, Vikram Samvat 1857 (December 1800 CE), and ascended the throne on March 31, 1828 CE. He was the son of Gulab Kunwar and was deeply inclined towards literature, poetry, and religion.
A Patron of Art, Literature, and Education
Maharana Jawan Singh’s reign, though marked by economic challenges, was a golden period for the cultural and literary development of Mewar. An accomplished poet, he wrote under the pseudonym “Brajraj” and composed verses primarily in Braj Bhasha, often dedicated to Lord Krishna. He also undertook numerous pilgrimages to holy sites and, upon his return, focused on reforming the indigenous education system, reflecting his progressive vision.
Architectural Contributions
Maharana Jawan Singh made significant contributions to Mewar’s architectural heritage. He constructed several temples in Udaipur, including:
- Jawan-Swaroopeshwar Mahadev Temple
- Jawan-Suraj Bihari Temple
- Mahakali Temple
The Jawan-Swaroopeshwar Mahadev Temple also houses exquisite marble statues of the Maharana and his queen, Bagheli.
International Influence
During his reign, Maharana Jawan Singh’s governance attracted international attention. King Rajendra Vikram Shah of Nepal sent emissaries to study the traditions of Mewar, as the Ranas of Nepal trace their lineage to the Sisodia dynasty of Mewar.
Maharana Jawan Singh passed away on August 30, 1838 CE, leaving behind a legacy of cultural enrichment and architectural grandeur. His contributions to art, literature, and education continue to inspire future generations.
