Udaipur, March 16, 2026 (Udaipur Kiran): In a major theft incident, unidentified thieves stole gold and silver jewellery worth around ₹1.80 crore from a jewellery shop located just 150 metres from Kurabad police station. The incident has raised serious questions about the night patrolling system of the local police.

According to information, the theft took place at the shop of Ashok Soni, operating under the name Mohit Jewellers in Kurabad’s Sadar Bazaar area. The thieves allegedly stole around 100 kg of silver and 200 grams of gold, packing the items into sacks before fleeing the spot.
Local traders claimed that the accused moved through nearby lanes for nearly two to three hours during the night before committing the crime. They alleged that if proper police patrolling had been in place, the incident could have been prevented.
After receiving information, DSP Gopal Chandel and Station House Officer Teju Singh reached the spot and inspected the area. Police also examined CCTV footage from nearby locations as part of the investigation. The incident has triggered strong anger among traders, who have questioned the effectiveness of police patrols in the area.
Thieves Used Gloves and Masks
The accused also damaged the CCTV camera installed in the shop and took away the DVR after breaking it. They even broke the electricity meter installed in the premises.
However, CCTV footage from another nearby shop shows six to seven suspects moving around the area. In the footage, the accused are seen wearing gloves and masks to conceal their identity and avoid leaving evidence for forensic investigation. They were also carrying sticks and other objects.
The footage suggests that the thieves had conducted a recce of the shop before committing the crime.
Shop Owner in Shock
The theft occurred at the jewellery shop of Ashok Soni, who lives in Udaipur and travels daily to Kurabad for business. His shop is located on the ground floor, while tenants live on the first floor. However, the tenants had reportedly been away since March 11, which gave the thieves an opportunity to execute the theft from the rear side of the shop.
Deeply shocked by the incident, Ashok Soni said the thieves carried out the crime without fear, indicating that criminals no longer seem to be afraid of the police.
