Zimbabwe Aims for Super-8 Spot by Eliminating Australia in T20 World Cup

New Delhi, February 17: The T20 World Cup 2026 has taken an exciting turn following Australia’s consecutive losses, making today a thrilling day in the tournament. With three matches scheduled, all eyes will be on the clash between Ireland and Zimbabwe.

Australia, considered one of the strongest teams globally, faced an unexpected defeat against Zimbabwe in the group stage and suffered another loss to Sri Lanka on the night of February 16. The stakes are high: if Zimbabwe defeats Ireland today, Australia will be eliminated from the tournament at the group stage, while Zimbabwe will advance to the Super stage.

The first match of the day will take place at Chennai’s M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Group D, starting at 11 AM IST, where New Zealand will face Canada. New Zealand began their campaign with victories against Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates but lost to South Africa by seven wickets in their third match. Meanwhile, Canada has lost both of its matches, first to South Africa and then to the UAE.

New Zealand aims to secure a win to ensure their progression alongside South Africa, while Canada faces the prospect of exiting the tournament at the group stage.

The most anticipated match of the day will be between Ireland and Zimbabwe, scheduled for 3 PM IST at Sri Lanka’s Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Australia will be hoping for an Irish victory, while Zimbabwe seeks to secure another win and eliminate Australia from contention.

Zimbabwe’s campaign has been impressive so far, having defeated Oman by eight wickets in their opening match and Australia by 23 runs in their second. Ireland, on the other hand, has won only one of their three matches, defeating Oman by 96 runs but losing to Sri Lanka and Australia.

The final match of the day will see Scotland take on Nepal at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, starting at 7 PM IST. Scotland has won just one of their three matches, securing a victory against Italy but losing to the West Indies and England. Nepal started strong but has since lost to England, Italy, and the West Indies.

Although the West Indies and England have already qualified for the next stage from this group, the match between Scotland and Nepal will be viewed as a battle for pride.

Today’s three matches not only have the potential to alter group dynamics but also to determine the fate of several major teams.
