Yamuna Floods Submerge 95 Villages in Panipat; Crops Damaged, Administration on Alert

Panipat, 3 September (Kiran News): Overflowing waters of the Yamuna river have flooded 95 villages across Panipat, Yamunanagar, Karnal, Sonipat, Faridabad, and Palwal after lakhs of cusecs were released from the Hathni Kund Barrage. Thousands of acres of standing crops have gone underwater, while district authorities are working with JCB machines and sandbags to protect villages from further inundation.

According to Sonu Saini, Assistant Junior Engineer at the Central Water Board, Yamuna’s water level in Panipat stood at 232.10 metres but is now receding. The barrage had released 3,29,642 cusecs, impacting both UP and Haryana sides of the river, where over 2 lakh people reside in the vicinity.

Relief efforts have been ramped up in affected villages. JCBs are deployed in each village and, with the help of locals, sandbags are being filled and placed to control water ingress. In Patthargarh village, a breached embankment has been repaired. Key affected villages include Rana Majra, Patthargarh, Tamshabad, Rispur, Nanheda, Jalmana, Adhmi, Mirzapur, Goyla Khurd, Goyla Kalan, Sanjauli, Khojkipur, Hathwala, Bilaspur, and Rakseda.

The Irrigation Department reported that water discharge from Hathni Kund Barrage is now decreasing—falling from 1,51,393 cusecs at 11 am to 1,42,024 cusecs by 6 pm.

District Collector Dr. Virendra Kumar Dahiya has appealed to residents of riverside villages to remain calm and alert, assuring that the administration is closely monitoring the situation. He advised people to cooperate with officials and share any emergency information promptly with the district administration.
