Extreme E, a premium off-road electric car racing series, uses hydrogen. The series announced this week that it will be renamed Extreme H and unveiled a hydrogen-powered race car for the transition called the Pioneer 25. The first season will begin in April 2025 in Saudi Arabia, and in England, Germany, Italy and the United States.
Extreme E held its first competition of 2021, where electric SUVs were tested in (predictably) extreme conditions, such as the desert. Some big teams took part, including McLaren. This year marks the fourth season of Extreme E. In a blog post about the transition to hydrogen, founder and CEO Alejandro Agach said the move is “not just about electric mobility; it’s about creating clean energy solutions that can be used anywhere, from remote locations to busy cities.”
“By bringing Xtreme H to market, we are not only demonstrating the viability of hydrogen as a fuel source, but also testing the broader hydrogen ecosystem, including hydrogen charging and transportation, and helping to create a market for it,” Akag wrote. The Pioneer 25, Extreme H’s flagship, is powered by a 75 kW hydrogen fuel cell.
