World Cup: France opens their campaign with 2 – 1 victory over Australia

Referee Andres Cunha from Uruguay did not initially award a spot-kick but after viewing the VAR footage, ruled it was a penalty and Griezmann coolly slotted past Socceroos’ goalkeeper Mathew Ryan at the Kazan Arena.

Australia were quick to respond as Jedinak converted a penalty. Finally Pogba’s winner, confirmed by goal-line technology, ensured France started the tournament with three points.

Lionel Messi-led Argentina opened their FIFA World Cup 2018 campaign against World Cup debutants Iceland on Saturday in Moscow.

Messi seemed to have a forgetable day as he missed a penalty that would have given Argentina the lead in a tight second half. Sergio Aguero scored for Argentina in the 19th minute, but Iceland levelled quickly through Alfred Finnbogason in the 23rd.

After that, the match was tight with Iceland defending Argentina’s strong attack, making it difficult for them to score. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
