WhatsApp introduces new security features in its iOS application. The instant messaging platform announced on Wednesday that it is introducing passcode support for iPhone users in the latest version of its app. The Meta-owned platform first started working on this feature in January 2024, when a password-related menu appeared for beta users. After about three months, it is now shipping to iOS users worldwide. It is worth noting that the passwordless login feature is already available in the WhatsApp app for Android.
WhatsApp announced the news in a post on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting that users can now log in to their accounts using Face ID, Touch ID and a password. The company didn’t mention which iOS versions are supported, but previous reports suggested the feature will be supported in iOS 17 and later versions. This means iPhone XR and later model users can set a password for their account.
Passkeys are an alternative method of login authentication that provides greater security compared to traditional methods such as SMS codes. Developed by the FIDO Alliance and supported by leading technology companies such as Apple, Google and Microsoft, this technology uses public key cryptography. This creates two sets of keys, one is stored in the platform’s cloud and the other remains with the user. For iOS users, your user key is likely stored in Apple’s keychain system and can be activated with Face ID or Touch ID. If both keys match, your account is authenticated. This system is more effective against phishing and similar scams.
How to set a WhatsApp password
Setting a password for WhatsApp on iOS is very easy. Users should first make sure they are running the latest version of the app. If not, please update the app first. Then follow these steps:

Open the WhatsApp app.
Tap the Settings tab at the bottom right of the screen.
Go to your account.
Tap “Passkey”. This is the fourth option from the top.
On the next page, click the “Create Passkey” button at the bottom.
You will be asked to continue with Face ID or Touch ID. Tap Next.
That’s it. The password is now active.
