Kolkata, August 3 (Udaipur Kiran): Continuous heavy rainfall over the past two days has severely disrupted life in West Bengal, including the capital city of Kolkata, and vast swathes of South Bengal. Several districts are facing flood-like situations. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has instructed district officials to monitor the situation round the clock and provide necessary assistance. Relief operations have been initiated in many districts. However, the situation is expected to worsen due to incessant rainfall.
Many districts in South Bengal are experiencing severe waterlogging. Roads and agricultural lands have been submerged in several places. In South Kolkata, areas like Dum Dum, Rajarhat, and Chinar Park have witnessed waterlogging on the roads, leading to traffic disruptions and making it difficult for people to venture out. In Birbhum’s Kankalitala, a foot of water had accumulated since Friday, submerging even the sanctum sanctorum of a temple. The rising water level of the Kopai river forced the closure of the Goyalpara bridge. Although the water level began to recede slightly on Saturday morning, the situation deteriorated due to continued rainfall.
Purulia and Sondpur areas of Hooghly district have experienced heavy waterlogging, submerging paddy and vegetable fields. The Arambag-Champadanga route has also been inundated, affecting normal life. In Baruipur of South 24 Parganas district, municipal workers are engaged in drainage efforts, but waterlogging persists in the area. A foot of water has accumulated in the Masterpara area due to the rain.
Malda and Jalpaiguri have been experiencing rainfall since Saturday morning. A yellow alert has been issued in Jalpaiguri due to the rising water level of the Teesta river. Koch Bihar has also been receiving light rain since Saturday morning.
Weather Department Forecast According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, rainfall in South Bengal may reduce slightly from Sunday, but heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in the districts of North Bengal. The general public has been advised to remain cautious. The administration has intensified relief and rescue operations in waterlogged areas.
The West Bengal government has issued flood warnings for seven districts – West Burdwan, Bankura, Birbhum, East Burdwan, West Medinipur, Hooghly, and Howrah. Officials in these districts have been instructed to identify low-lying areas and take necessary steps to deal with potential flood situations. Heavy rainfall is also occurring in the North Bengal districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar, leading to landslides and road closures in several places. Alternative routes are being used to control traffic in this region, and people are being evacuated to safer locations.
The government has directed to keep adequate stocks of relief materials and essential commodities. Relief work is being carried out rapidly in the affected areas, and additional steps are being taken to address the rising water levels in low-lying areas.
