March 26, 2025 — In an unexpected disruption, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system suffered a widespread outage on Wednesday evening, leaving thousands of users across India unable to complete digital transactions. Popular payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm were reportedly affected, with users facing repeated transaction failures and app glitches.

Thousands of Complaints Flood DownDetector
According to outage monitoring platform DownDetector, more than 2,750 complaints were logged by 7:50 PM IST, with Google Pay users alone reporting over 296 issues. These included failed transactions, app crashes, and inability to access services. Other UPI-based platforms experienced a similar spike in user complaints, sparking concerns among merchants and consumers alike.
Likely Cause: Technical Glitch in Bank Servers
While the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has not released an official statement, initial reports suggest that the downtime may be linked to technical issues in multiple bank servers. These backend disruptions affected interoperability among UPI apps, halting seamless transactions across platforms.
Users took to social media to voice their frustration, sharing screenshots of failed payments and asking whether the issue was limited to their devices.
What Users Should Do
Digital payment experts have advised users to try alternative payment methods, such as credit/debit cards or net banking, until the UPI services are fully restored. Those facing persistent issues are urged to contact their respective banks or payment service providers.
Additionally, users are reminded to:
-
Keep their payment apps updated
-
Avoid sharing UPI PINs or sensitive details
-
Refrain from repeated transaction attempts during outages to prevent potential account locks
