New Delhi, May 1: Across India, various temples dedicated to Goddess Bhagwati are known as Shakti Peeths and Siddhi Peeths. However, many miraculous and mysterious temples remain hidden in nature, with little known about them. One such temple is located in Odisha, where devotees can worship not only the back of the goddess but also have a rare glimpse of her face just once a year.
Situated in the village of Nuagada in the Patrapur block of Ganjam district, the Maa Kuraisuni Temple is a renowned and ancient Hindu pilgrimage site. This temple is famous for its unique tradition, where the back of the goddess is worshipped throughout the year, and her face is revealed only on the day of Durga Ashtami in the month of Ashwin. Nestled in a picturesque natural setting, it is believed that merely seeing the goddess can relieve one of their sorrows, while the rare sight of her face fulfills every devotee’s wish.
According to local priest Dinbandhu Jani, the temple was constructed by the king of Surangi in the early 1900s. The architecture and style of the temple appear to be inspired by South Indian designs, featuring a colorful Gopuram adorned with beautiful statues of various deities. The surrounding scenery is tranquil, with lush forests and greenery, making it an extraordinary place for spiritual peace and serenity.
Within the temple complex, several idols dedicated to Maa Kali depict her in a fierce form. There is also a tree outside the temple known as the “wish-fulfilling tree,” where devotees tie red cloths to express their wishes. While the temple holds significant faith among locals, devotees from other states often miss the opportunity to visit.
The temple attracts devotees year-round, especially during festivals and auspicious occasions, transforming it into a vibrant spiritual center. Visitors can experience the rich cultural heritage and tranquility of this sacred site.
