Guwahati, September 27 (Udaipur Kiran) : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday the approval of an underground cabling project for Guwahati. The initiative aims to bury overhead power and communication lines along the city’s major roads.
Sarma emphasized that the project is designed to enhance the city’s skyline and urban aesthetics by removing unsightly and tangled wires. He shared details of the project on social media platform X, stating it would contribute to a cleaner and more organized urban environment. “Your skyline deserves to be one of the most beautiful sights,” he wrote.
The estimated cost of the project exceeds ₹177 crore and will cover approximately 18 kilometers across five designated corridors in Guwahati. The plan involves replacing overhead cables with an underground network, which is expected to significantly alter the appearance of these routes.
This initiative is also aimed at addressing the issue of power lines and cables that hang over streets, which detract from the visual appeal of busy urban areas. Sarma noted that the project is a crucial step towards modernizing the city’s infrastructure while enhancing its beauty.
The announcement comes at a time when Guwahati is experiencing rapid urban expansion and an increasing demand for improved civic amenities. As Assam’s largest urban center and a key gateway to Northeast India, the city is under pressure from a growing population and rising commercial activities.
The underground cabling project is anticipated to help organize the power and communication networks within the identified corridors, providing relief from the tangled mess of overhead wires.
