TVS Overtakes Honda in Scooter Market, Grabs 29% Share as Buyers Switch Brands

New Delhi, October 28 (Udaipur Kiran)Indian scooter buyers are steadily shifting from Honda to TVS. With a strong product lineup and consistent sales growth, TVS Motor Company has now captured 29% of India’s scooter market, marking a significant milestone in the segment’s ongoing transformation.

Scooter Market

The Indian scooter industry, long dominated by Honda, is witnessing a major shift. Data from the first half of FY2026 (April–September 2025) shows that TVS has emerged as a strong contender, challenging Honda’s leadership as record sales and sharp changes in market share reshape the segment.

Scooter Sales on Track to Cross 70 Lakh Units

After achieving record sales of 68.5 lakh units in FY2025, the scooter market is now heading toward the 70-lakh mark for the first time in FY2026. In the first half of the fiscal, total scooter sales reached 37.21 lakh units — up 6.42% year-on-year.
A price reduction under the new GST 2.0 regime helped push monthly sales to an all-time high of 7,33,391 units in September 2025.

Honda Slips, TVS Rises Fast

The biggest shift is between the two top players — Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) and TVS Motor Company.

  • Honda’s share falls from 45% to 39%
Honda sold 14.3 lakh scooters in H1 FY2026, a 9% decline compared to the same period last year. As a result, its market share dropped from 45% to 39%. Flagship models like Activa and Dio are now facing tough competition from rivals.

  • TVS sales jump 27%
TVS Motor stunned the market by selling 10.8 lakh scooters — a massive 27% jump over last year. Its market share climbed from 24% to 29%.
This strong growth came from both its petrol models (Jupiter, NTorq, Zest) and its electric scooter iQube, which alone recorded a 20% year-on-year increase.

Suzuki, Hero, and Ather Show Strong Gains

Suzuki posted 11% growth, selling 5.63 lakh units led by the popular Access 125, raising its share to 15%. The company is also gearing up to launch its first electric scooter, e-Access.

Hero MotoCorp grew an impressive 32%, selling 2.41 lakh scooters, powered by strong demand for its electric model Vida, which saw a 132% surge in sales.

Start-up Ather Energy also registered a remarkable 70% growth, selling 1.09 lakh units, thanks to the success of its family scooter Rizta.

Bajaj and Yamaha Face Challenges

Bajaj Auto reported a 6% decline in overall scooter sales due to production issues but has seen a revival with its Chetak electric scooter. Yamaha’s sales also slipped 6%, leaving it with a 4.07% market share, though its premium Aerox 155 scooter recorded a 16% rise.

Electric Scooters Powering Growth

Electric scooters (e-2W) continue to drive the sector’s expansion. In H1 FY2026, sales of electric scooters reached 4,42,640 units — up 29% year-on-year. Their market share rose from 11% to 12%.
With rising fuel prices and growing awareness of cost-efficient mobility, electric scooters are emerging as a preferred long-term option for many Indian buyers.
