Beijing, May 14: U.S. President Donald Trump visited the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Temple of Heaven, on the second day of his three-day trip, accompanied by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump was awestruck by the stunning architecture and remarked, “This is great,” upon exiting the site.
As they walked through the temple complex, Xi provided insights about the historical site. Despite the American media’s attempts to gauge Trump’s reactions, the president appeared unusually restrained this time.
Both leaders posed for photographs, during which Trump praised China, stating, “Very impressive. Wonderful place. Incredible. China is beautiful.”
When journalists inquired about Taiwan, both remained silent, with Trump refraining from further comments on the matter. He advised waiting when asked about a bilateral meeting.
Taiwan has been a point of tension between China and the U.S., with America supplying arms for its self-defense while maintaining strong trade relations with China.
Vietnam has designated both superpowers as “Comprehensive Strategic Partners,” adopting a “bamboo diplomacy” approach that allows for flexibility while firmly upholding its national interests. This strategy enables Vietnam to maintain balanced relations with major powers without overtly favoring one side.
Chinese diplomats typically select historical sites for welcoming foreign leaders not just for show but to convey symbolic messages about bilateral relations. The Temple of Heaven, dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, is where emperors prayed for good harvests. This UNESCO World Heritage site, constructed in 1420, is one of China’s most visited tourist attractions, drawing millions of visitors annually.
