Tamil Nadu Launches 300 New Buses

Chennai, June 25: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated the services of 300 new buses operated by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation in Chennai. This marks a significant enhancement to the public transport fleet.

During a ceremony held at the Secretariat, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay flagged off the 300 new diesel and CNG buses. Following the inauguration, he took a ride on one of the new buses, greeting the drivers and wishing them well. The Chief Minister was also seen recording videos while seated at the front of the bus.

It is noteworthy that Tamil Nadu operates eight state-owned transport corporations, including the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) based in Chennai, various units of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Villupuram, Kumbakonam, Salem, Coimbatore, Madurai, and Tirunelveli), and the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC), which provides long-distance inter-city services.

The newly added fleet has been procured for seven of these eight transport corporations, excluding the State Express Transport Corporation. These buses aim to strengthen public transport services across various regions of the state and improve connectivity for daily commuters.

The fleet includes both diesel and CNG buses, reflecting the government’s efforts to modernize public transport and expand services in urban and rural areas. The introduction of these new buses is expected to replace older vehicles and enhance the reliability, safety, and comfort of passenger services operated by state transport enterprises.

Initially, the launch of these buses was scheduled for June 22, coinciding with Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s birthday. In preparation for the event, the new buses were transported from different parts of Tamil Nadu to Chennai and stationed at key locations, including the Koyambedu and Kilambakkam bus terminals. However, the inauguration program was later rescheduled.
