Strong Bowling, But Batting Needs Improvement: Surya Kumar Yadav

Ahmedabad, February 23: The Indian cricket team faced a disappointing 76-run defeat against South Africa in the Super-8 match. Captain Surya Kumar Yadav expressed that while the bowling performance was commendable, there is room for improvement in batting.

At the Narendra Modi Stadium, South Africa scored 187 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, while India was bowled out for just 111 runs in 18.5 overs.

After the team’s first loss in the T20 World Cup 2026, Yadav stated, “I felt we were in the match from the start. We bowled very well initially, with South Africa losing three wickets for just 21 runs. However, their batting between the 7th and 15th overs was impressive. We managed to come back later in the match, but overall, our bowling was good; we just needed to improve our batting.”

He added, “When chasing a target of 180-185 runs, you can’t win the match in the powerplay, but you can certainly lose it. We lost too many wickets in the powerplay and failed to build the small partnerships we needed while chasing such a total. But that’s cricket. We will learn from this, review our performance, and come back stronger.”

In this match, Jasprit Bumrah took 3 wickets for just 15 runs, while Arshdeep Singh claimed 2 wickets for 28 runs. The captain praised his bowlers, saying, “Everyone knows how lethal the Bumrah-Arshdeep duo is. They have played together before, and today they bowled eight overs, took about five wickets, and conceded around 45-50 runs. They bowled brilliantly, and that’s what we expect from them. Both are experienced, and having them in the team is very beneficial for us.”

India will face Zimbabwe in their next Super-8 match on February 26. Captain Surya emphasized, “In the next match against Zimbabwe, our focus will be on good batting, bowling, and fielding. We will keep things simple and play the kind of cricket we want to play; nothing will change. I am confident that we will bounce back strongly.”
