Spains Coach Urges Team to Secure World Cup Qualification Against Iceland

Madrid, June 9: Sonia Bermudez, the head coach of Spain’s women’s national team, has issued a rallying call to her players, emphasizing the need for hard work to secure direct qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Following a remarkable 4-0 victory over England, Spain has climbed to the top of their group and now faces Iceland in their final group match on Tuesday. A win would guarantee their spot in Brazil.

According to a report by Xinhua, even if Spain fails to win, England could still qualify by defeating Ukraine in a concurrent match. Spain previously triumphed over Iceland 3-0 in their first group match on March 3 in Castellón, but Bermudez anticipates a tough challenge in Reykjavik.

In a pre-match press conference, Bermudez stated, “We know that on their home ground, they (Iceland) are a very difficult and strong opponent, but we are eagerly looking forward to tomorrow to try and achieve our goal.” She warned that Iceland is a formidable team, particularly in aerial duels and second balls, and they can quickly change the game with their powerful forwards.

Bermudez expressed her satisfaction with Friday’s victory, highlighting Spain’s impressive performance that kept England at bay for 90 minutes. Alexia Putellas scored two goals, while Patri Guijarro and Claudia Pina also found the net.

She added, “Clearly, when you win and the way we won has an impact, but this is a completely different game. Tuesday’s match will be in a different country and under different circumstances.” Bermudez noted that if Spain had been given the chance to qualify directly by winning their last group match at the start of the qualifiers, everyone would have accepted it. She concluded, “Spain has never won in Iceland. I think that adds extra motivation.”
