The hosts struggled with the bat and were bowled out for just 131 runs, before South Africa chased down the target comfortably, finishing at 137/3 in 20.5 overs.
For England, wicketkeeper-batsman Jamie Smith was the top scorer with 54 runs. However, the rest of the batting line-up faltered, with captain Harry Brook being run out—a rare occurrence, marking the first time an English captain has been run out in an ODI at Headingley.
South African bowlers delivered an outstanding performance. Keshav Maharaj stood out, taking 4 wickets for 22 runs and was named ‘Player of the Match’. The pace bowlers also played a key role in dismantling the English batting order.
Chasing a modest target, South African captain Aiden Markram led from the front, scoring a quickfire 86 runs off 55 balls. Riaan Rickelton also contributed with an unbeaten 31, guiding the team to a comfortable win.
