Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Set to Debut as India Face New Zealand in 300th T20I at Christchurch
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is set to play for India in their 300th T20 International today against New Zealand in Christchurch, after Ishan Kishan was ruled out due to injury.
Christchurch, October 24 (Udaipur Kiran) : The second match of the five-game T20 International series between India and New Zealand will be played today at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:30 pm, with India currently leading the series 1-0 after their victory in the opening encounter.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is set to feature in this match, following Ishan Kishan’s exclusion due to injury. India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak indicated during the pre-match conference that Sooryavanshi would be included in the playing eleven.
This fixture marks a milestone for Indian cricket, as it will be the team’s 300th T20 International. India will become only the second team in the world to reach this landmark, following Pakistan, who have played 304 T20Is. If India secure a win in Christchurch, they will become the first nation to achieve 200 victories in T20 Internationals.
Sooryavanshi’s role in the batting order remains a point of discussion. At the Asian Games, India fielded Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Sooryavanshi together, with Sooryavanshi opening and Samson batting at number three. In the previous match, however, Samson opened the innings and scored an impressive 67 runs from 33 balls. The team may opt to send Sooryavanshi at number three in this match.
In head-to-head T20I encounters, India and New Zealand have met 32 times. India have won 20 matches, New Zealand have claimed 11 victories, and one match ended in a tie.
Abhishek Sharma is on the verge of completing 1,000 runs in 2026, requiring just 15 more. He has amassed 985 runs in 35 matches at a strike rate of 202.67. In the first match of the current series, Abhishek scored 29 runs from 12 deliveries.
Among Indian bowlers, Arshdeep Singh has taken 36 wickets in 28 matches. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is also expected to play a key role in the powerplay overs.
For New Zealand, Tim Seifert has been the top T20 performer in 2026, scoring 453 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 164.13. Captain Mitchell Santner has taken 14 wickets in 17 matches, maintaining an economy rate of 7.89. Santner also picked up two wickets in the previous match.
The last T20I at Hagley Oval saw over 450 runs scored. Fast bowlers may find swing early on, but batting conditions are expected to improve as the game progresses. Weather forecasts suggest a low temperature in Christchurch during the match. Dew could play a role, possibly prompting the toss winner to opt for bowling first.
With Ishan Kishan sidelined, Jharkhand batsman Kumar Kushagra has been added to the Indian squad. Ishan is currently ruled out only for the second T20I, having suffered a mild injury to his right adductor muscle during the first match. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not specified a recovery timeline for Kishan.
