Shardul Thakur Shines as Mumbai Indians Secure IPL 2026 Opener

Mumbai, March 30: In a thrilling start to IPL 2026, the Mumbai Indians (MI) clinched victory against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by six wickets at Wankhede Stadium. Stellar performances from Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton propelled MI to a successful chase, while Shardul Thakur played a pivotal role with the ball, earning the ‘Player of the Match’ title.

After the match, Thakur expressed his excitement, stating, “Bowling the sixth over was a challenge. I enjoy challenges. Today’s performance was similar. Playing for Mumbai is special; I have both bitter and sweet memories here. I was a net bowler in 2010, and finally, I got to play for my home team, the Mumbai Indians. If I can stay here, I would be truly happy. The support from the management has been incredible.”

Thakur took three crucial wickets, dismissing Finn Allen, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cameron Green, conceding 39 runs in four overs. Although he has been part of the IPL since 2015, this was his first match for MI, marking a significant milestone as the team won their first season opener since 2012.

KKR, batting first after losing the toss, scored 220 runs for four wickets, with captain Rahane top-scoring at 67 runs. Ankur Raghuwanshi contributed 51 runs off 29 balls, while Finn Allen and Rinku Singh added 37 and 33 runs, respectively.

In response, MI chased down the target, scoring 224 runs for four wickets in 19.1 overs. Rohit Sharma led the charge with a blistering 78 runs off 38 balls, including six fours and six sixes, achieving his fastest fifty in IPL history in just 23 balls. Rickelton also impressed with 81 runs off 43 balls, forming a formidable partnership of 148 runs for the first wicket with Rohit.
