Mumbai, February 13: Shahid Kapoor, Tripti Dimri, and Avinash Tiwari’s romantic-action drama film ‘O Romeo’ has hit theaters. The action-packed film features several intense scenes that could be quite frightening. With more brutality than romance, it is not wrong to say that ‘O Romeo’ bears a resemblance to Shahid’s 2019 release ‘Kabir Singh.’ However, the question remains: can ‘O Romeo’ achieve the same blockbuster status as ‘Kabir Singh’?
Since ‘Kabir Singh,’ Shahid Kapoor has released three films, which have ranged from flops to average successes. In 2022, he starred alongside Mrunal Thakur in ‘Jersey,’ an inspirational story where Shahid’s character, Arjun Talwar, attempts to fulfill his dreams through his son while navigating his own failed career. Although the film’s heartfelt narrative resonated with audiences, it only managed to earn around 30 crores against a budget of 60-95 crores, prompting the makers to seek recovery through OTT platforms.
Following ‘Jersey,’ Shahid’s role in the OTT release ‘Bloody Daddy’ showcased him in another fierce and violent character. Despite a budget of 200 crores, the film was released on OTT rather than in theaters, leading many in the industry to question the decision. Reports indicated that Shahid received a hefty fee of 40 crores for the film, but it garnered average ratings on the OTT platform.
In ‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya,’ Shahid appeared in a romantic role alongside Kriti Sanon, where she played a robot. The film had a strong collection in its first week but began to decline after the tenth day. Nevertheless, it managed to recover its budget, earning between 100-150 crores against a budget of 75 crores, marking it as an average hit.
Since ‘Kabir Singh,’ Shahid Kapoor’s films have either flopped or been average hits. ‘Kabir Singh’ remains a significant film in his career, earning nearly 400 crores at the box office despite being labeled toxic and a societal threat. It was his first blockbuster in seven years, with a budget of 60 crores. Now, it remains to be seen if ‘O Romeo,’ with its violent storyline and romance, can bring Shahid the same level of success as ‘Kabir Singh.’
