Roots Unbeaten 99 Leads England to Victory in Second ODI

Cardiff, July 17: England secured a thrilling four-wicket victory against India in the second ODI match held at Sophia Gardens on Thursday, leveling the three-match series at 1-1. Joe Root emerged as the star of the match, scoring an unbeaten 99 runs, earning him the ‘Player of the Match’ accolade.

After suffering a 0-4 defeat in the preceding T20 series, India had won the first ODI in Birmingham by six wickets. The final match of the series is scheduled for July 19 in London.

Batting first after losing the toss, India struggled to reach 233 runs in just 44 overs. Captain Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma provided a solid start with a 44-run partnership. Gill scored 31 runs before returning to the pavilion, while Rohit contributed 26 runs in a second-wicket partnership of 60 runs with Virat Kohli.

India faced a collapse after reaching 178 runs, with Kohli scoring 65 runs off 66 balls and Shreyas Iyer adding 66 runs from 71 balls. Jasprit Bumrah also made a quickfire 20 runs off 13 balls, hitting four boundaries in a single over.

For England, Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson took three wickets each, while Saqib Mahmood claimed two wickets. Sam Curran and Will Jacks contributed with one wicket each.

In response, England chased down the target in 44.1 overs, despite losing Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethel early in their innings. Joe Root steadied the innings with crucial partnerships, including a 72-run stand with Will Jacks for the sixth wicket, guiding England to victory. Root remained not out on 99 runs, hitting nine boundaries, while Atkinson supported him with an unbeaten 23 runs.

Gurnoor Barar was the standout bowler for India, taking two wickets, while Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Shivam Dubey, and Axar Patel each took one wicket.
