Putin, Netanyahu Discuss Middle East Situation Over Phone

Moscow, October 7 (Udaipur Kiran): Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a telephonic conversation to discuss the current situation in the Middle East, according to a statement from the Kremlin press service, as reported by Russia’s official news agency TASS.

During the discussion, Putin also spoke with Netanyahu about US President Donald Trump’s plan aimed at restoring normalcy in the Gaza Strip.

The Kremlin said the two leaders exchanged views on various regional issues, including the Syrian conflict and the Iranian nuclear programme. Both sides expressed their willingness to find solutions through dialogue to enhance stability in Syria and address concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear activities.

The talks come amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel, as well as failed rounds of nuclear negotiations between Tehran and the United States. Despite five rounds of discussions this year, no breakthrough has been achieved. Recently, Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signed an agreement in Cairo on September 9 to resume cooperation, which had earlier been suspended following attacks by Israel and the US.

On September 29, the UN Security Council rejected a draft resolution submitted by Russia and China seeking to extend Resolution 2231, which supports the Iran nuclear deal, by six months. UN sanctions against Iran came into effect on September 28. In response, on October 5, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi warned that Tehran might reconsider its cooperation with the IAEA, stating that the Cairo agreement has lost relevance following the imposition of sanctions.

The Kremlin also stated that Putin extended greetings to Netanyahu and the people of Israel on the occasion of the Jewish festival of Sukkot, which began on October 6. The festival, also known as the Feast of Tabernacles, marks the Exodus from Egypt and symbolizes harvest and agricultural completion.
