Patna, September 27 (Udaipur Kiran) : Political maneuvering is ramping up in Bihar as the state prepares for elections to the Legislative Council, set to take place on October 23. Eight seats are up for grabs, divided equally between four graduate and four teacher constituencies. Various political parties have begun announcing their candidates, and the internal dynamics within these parties are coming under scrutiny.
The elections will cover the graduate constituencies of Patna, Darbhanga, Tirhut, and Kosi, along with the teacher constituencies of Patna, Darbhanga, Tirhut, and Saran. According to the Election Commission‘s schedule, the nomination process will commence on September 29, with the last date for submissions set for October 6. The scrutiny of nomination papers is scheduled for October 7, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until October 9.
In a significant development, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has allocated four seats to the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] and four to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The JD(U) has already announced its candidates for all four seats: Neeraj Kumar for Patna graduate, Abhishek Jha for Tirhut graduate, Anand Pushkar for Saran teacher, and Ghanshyam Rai for Darbhanga teacher constituency.
Meanwhile, the BJP is still deliberating on its candidates for the four allocated seats. Discussions regarding candidate selection took place during the party’s core committee meeting on Saturday. While four names are reportedly close to being finalized, the official list will clarify the situation. Notably, the allocation for the Darbhanga seat has changed compared to previous elections, with the BJP now contesting the Darbhanga graduate seat while the JD(U) has retained the Darbhanga teacher constituency.
The JD(U) has already declared Ghanshyam Rai as its candidate for the Darbhanga seat, which could lead to an intriguing electoral battle between the two parties. In addition to the NDA, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Jan Suraj have also entered the fray. The RJD has fielded six candidates so far, while Jan Suraj has announced candidates for all eight seats.
Jan Suraj had to change its candidate for the Tirhut teacher constituency after Bhushan Jha returned his ticket, with Shyam Nandan Yadav now stepping in as the new candidate. This election is particularly significant as it will test the political parties’ influence among both teacher and graduate voters. As the nomination process unfolds, the competitive landscape for the various seats will become clearer.
