PM Modi to Launch Indias First Hydrogen Train

New Delhi, July 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Jind, Haryana, on Friday. This initiative will place India among a select group of countries utilizing hydrogen for clean rail transport.

The operation of the hydrogen train between Jind and Sonipat marks a significant achievement for Indian Railways. This project reflects the railway’s commitment to innovation, energy efficiency, and environmentally friendly transportation. It is also expected to contribute to achieving clean energy and net-zero carbon emission goals.

The Jind-Sonipat section has been chosen as the pilot route for these operations. An indigenous hydrogen storage and refueling facility has been established in Jind for the train. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization has granted the necessary licenses for the storage and dispensing of compressed hydrogen gas at the site.

With the launch of the hydrogen train, India joins the ranks of countries like Germany, Japan, China, and the United States that are working on using hydrogen for clean rail transport. According to a government statement, the technology is still in its early stages, which is why very few countries are currently operating or testing such systems.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology generates electricity through a chemical reaction using hydrogen, producing only water vapor as a byproduct. This makes it a clean alternative to traditional fossil fuel systems. Hydrogen-based rail systems are rapidly being recognized worldwide as a viable solution for sustainable transport.

A hydrogen compression system has been installed for refueling operations, along with the necessary technical support and spare parts to ensure reliable and safe operations. A standby compressor unit is also being arranged.

Additionally, according to an official statement from the Madhya Pradesh government, Prime Minister Modi will virtually inaugurate the revamped Tikamgarh railway station under the Centre’s ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.’ Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will participate in the event at Tikamgarh.
