Puducherry, March 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for several development projects worth over ₹2,700 crores in Puducherry on Sunday. These initiatives aim to strengthen infrastructure, expand civic amenities, promote industrial progress, enhance education, provide world-class healthcare, and accelerate sustainable growth.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi expressed his honor to be in Puducherry, a land of revered saints, poets, and freedom fighters. He highlighted the contributions of Mahakavi Subramania Bharati, who ignited the flame of nationalism, and the spiritual vision provided by Sri Aurobindo and Mother.
“When I first came here, I introduced the mantra ‘BEST Puducherry,’ which stands for Business, Education, Spirituality, and Tourism. Over the past four and a half years, this vision has borne fruit, leading to good governance and development in Puducherry. When the central government and the union territory work with a shared vision and dedication, the results are swift and impactful,” he stated.
The Prime Minister noted that Puducherry has shown remarkable growth in per capita income and has achieved the highest social progress index score in the country. He assured that the NDA government would further accelerate development in Puducherry with the launch of these ₹2,700 crore projects.
PM Modi emphasized the ongoing development of high-quality infrastructure across India, mentioning that the current year’s budget allocates a record ₹12 lakh crores for infrastructure projects, which will also benefit the people of Puducherry. He announced that Puducherry has been included in the capital investment scheme for states, previously limited to states only, ensuring more funding for better roads, water supply, coastal infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and various other projects.
Among the projects inaugurated by the Prime Minister are the operation of e-buses under the ‘PM e-Bus Service,’ an integrated command and control center under the Smart City Mission, and housing for economically weaker sections under the City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain (CITIIS) scheme. He also inaugurated significant sewage and water supply projects by the Puducherry government.
Additionally, PM Modi laid the foundation for the modernization of the Regional Cancer Center at JIPMER, the APJ Abdul Kalam Engineering Block at the National Institute of Technology, Karaikal, and new buildings and hostels at Pondicherry University.
He dedicated the 750-acre Karasur-Sedarapet industrial area to the nation and laid the groundwork for various water supply projects aimed at ensuring clean and safe drinking water for residents of Puducherry. The Prime Minister also announced the construction of 41 rural roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, the development of a heritage town in Puducherry, and mangrove conservation efforts under the ‘Misti’ initiative for shoreline habitats and tangible income.
