New Delhi, May 1: Political reactions have surged following the Supreme Court’s decision to grant bail to Congress leader Pawan Khera. The case is linked to comments made about Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife. Reacting to the verdict, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Anurag Dhanda accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of misusing central agencies during elections.
Dhanda stated that the cases involving Khera and the election strategy organization I-PAC clearly indicate that agencies are used to suppress the opposition during elections. He alleged that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) took action against officials associated with I-PAC, attempting to influence the campaign. He also mentioned that the Assam police conducted raids in Khera’s case during the model code of conduct, exerting pressure on the opposition.
According to Dhanda, the quick relief from courts after elections suggests that the timing of the actions was politically motivated. He further claimed that the BJP has used agencies as a “tool” in collaboration with the Election Commission.
In Kolkata, while justifying the strongroom controversy and Mamata Banerjee’s visit, Dhanda remarked that the election had turned into a contest between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Election Commission. He emphasized that any negligence in the security of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) would compel the party to defend its mandate, validating Banerjee’s concerns.
Meanwhile, in Guwahati, AIUDF General Secretary Rafiqul Islam also commented on Khera’s bail, stating that obtaining bail is a right for every citizen. However, he accused the BJP of continuously misusing agencies, making it easier for them to play political games against opposition parties.
