Russia Suspends Strikes Amid Ceasefire in Oleshky, Facing Humanitarian Crisis

Russia has paused strikes on Kherson as a ceasefire in Oleshky enables aid efforts. Residents face severe shortages amid ongoing violence.

Russia has suspended military strikes on the Ukrainian province of Kherson as a local ceasefire takes effect in Oleshky, a town enduring severe shortages of food and medicine.

The ceasefire commenced at 01:00 GMT on Tuesday to facilitate a humanitarian mission organized by Melania Trump, the First Lady of the United States. This mission aims to deliver aid and facilitate evacuations from Oleshky, which had a pre-war population of approximately 24,000 but now has only about 6,000 residents, isolated since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.

According to the United Nations, residents of Oleshky have faced dire conditions without access to food, water, or electricity for three years. Many have resorted to cooking garden weeds out of desperation. One resident expressed doubts about the ceasefire, stating, “I don’t believe in Russia’s humanity,” highlighting the deep mistrust between the two nations.

The agreement for the ceasefire was reached on October 23, amid ongoing efforts to revive peace talks that have stalled for several years. The truce is expected to last until at least Saturday, and negotiators involved in the aid mission anticipate sending supplies of food, medicines, and other essentials to the town.

Oleshky has suffered extensive damage from the war and flooding following the Kakhovka Dam’s destruction earlier this year. Many residents are trapped by land mines and continuous drone attacks, making evacuation perilous. Communication with those inside the town remains difficult, and the uncertainty surrounding the ceasefire leaves many villagers anxious about their future.

Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s commissioner for human rights, has confirmed the ceasefire’s initiation, asserting that the Ukrainian side is adhering to its commitments. However, attacks have persisted in other regions, including Kyiv, where Russian forces launched missiles and drone strikes, resulting in casualties.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the ongoing Russian strikes, indicating that delays in receiving air defense systems have exacerbated the situation. He emphasized the need for immediate support to counter Russia’s attacks and protect civilian lives.

The ceasefire in Oleshky represents a rare opportunity for humanitarian relief, but many locals remain skeptical about its effectiveness and the possibility of safe passage back into Ukrainian-held areas.
